Contents

Science
  1. A systematic study undertaken to obtain knowledge about nature that can be empirically verified.
  2. A systematic study undertaken to obtain knowledge about a subject.
Serendipity

Making unexpected and fortunate discoveries, often when looking for something else. (E.g. the discovery of the antibacterial properties of penicillin by Alexander Fleming, the discovery of the bacterial cause of ulcers in humans by Barry Marshall, and the discovery of the chemical structure of benzene by Kekulé.)

Soft counterflow

Counterflow is exhibited in such a way that the prerequisite knowledge to identifying the counterflow involved demands a thorough knowledge of natural regularity and/or the design processes involved.

is exhibited through the entire process involved in the phenomena being studied. With systemic counterflow, counterflow may or may not be perceived within individual parts of the system.

Spandrel

In evolutionary biology, a spandrel is a phenotypic characteristic that evolved as a side effect of a true adaptation.

Statistical probability

Detecting design by probabilistically eliminating all other possible causes. The Design Inference of William Dembski employs this approach to design detection.

Surface counterflow

Counterflow is clearly exhibited through the phenomena being studied.

Synchronic counterflow

Counterflow is perceivable in an instantaneous fashion, e.g. a photograph of the phenomenon will exhibit its counterflow.

Systemic counterflow

Counterflow is exhibited through the entire process involved in the phenomena being studied. With systemic counterflow, counterflow may or may not be perceived within individual parts of the system.
