More fast facts that point to intelligent design

Though some scholars have major problems with the prospect that intelligent design may be true, there are strong facts suggesting that ID could be correct. The main areas of knowledge that give evidence pointing to intelligent design are biology, geology, physics, cosmology, and cognitive sciences.

Biology – the study of life
Geology – the study of planet Earth
Physics – the study of matter and energy
Cosmology – the study of the universe
Cognitive Sciences – the study of mind or thought

Life’s information system, the most powerful in the known universe, was present from the beginning of life to the present.
- Every living thing that we know of, no matter how ancient or new, needs DNA to live. Flying in the face of Darwinian “simple-to-complex” logic, life’s DNA-based data system was present from life’s beginning. Life’s information system is remarkably well-suited for both single-cell and multi-cell life. Remembering that blind evolution cannot plan for the future, what is the better explanation of this powerful information system, blind processes or intelligent design? (more)

Life uses its code to search for solutions.
- Life uses its information system to change its sophisticated machines. When life runs into problems, it can “turn on” processes that use its information system to search for solutions. More and more research is telling us that evolution is a function that life itself is in control of.

Effective search functions require intelligence.
- In every case that we know where a powerful search function came from, it always comes from intelligence. The only known cause of powerful search functions is intelligence. So, the one and only known source of powerful search functions is intelligence.

Life’s information system has parts that find errors, and other parts that correct the errors.
- The genetic information system has parts that find and repair broken or miscopied strands of DNA. These "DNA repair" processes were present in the earliest life. Can a system that is this elegant, powerful and intricate arise from a blind process? The theory of intelligent design suggests that intelligence is involved with the origin of this type of organism. Scientists study life as if it was designed.
- Scientists studying the parts of living cells use a method called “reverse-engineering.” Reverse-engineering is when you remove a part, and see what happens, in order to find out what the part does. This reverse-engineering method was first developed by people who studied unknown machines, where little or nothing was known about how the machines were made. Since little or nothing is known about how the molecular machines of the cell were made, reverse-engineering is very helpful. Scientists use this method, originally developed to study machines made by intelligent humans, to study the parts of the living cell.

Intelligent design has made predictions about "junk DNA" that are shown to be true by the latest research.
- While many Darwinists called the non-coding genes "junk DNA," ID scholars proposed much of this DNA would be shown to have function. All of the research in the last 5 years has confirmed the predictions of ID scholars.

Darwinian evolution is not powerful enough to create the complex machines in living cells.
- The latest research from experiments testing the power of Darwinian processes indicate that they cannot create the molecular machines that are found in the cell. If random variation and natural selection cannot create them, it is possible that intelligent design is required to explain their origin.

The main power of Darwinian evolution is to break the parts of living cells.
- All of the cases where we have confirmed that a change was caused by Darwinian processes, the effect was destructive or degenerative. The parts and complex machines that are subjected to Darwinian evolution show that they have been damaged. Microbiologists studying thousands and thousands of generations of bacteria have shown this to be true.

Living cells can plan ahead.
- Living organisms have the ability of foresight, and can “plan ahead” for the future. Scientists have found that bacteria can modify genes in expectation of future events.(1, 2) Biologists influenced by Darwinism have been searching the cell for blind processes that could create these features. Could an unguided process with no foresight create an organism with foresight? Researchers who are open to ID think that intelligence is a better explanation.

Living cells are not just the passive victims of random changes in their genes, but cells have ways of causing mutations in their own DNA.
- In many of the cases where we have confirmed data about the processes involved with evolution, the process of changing the genes is under the control of the organism itself. “If the cell senses damage, and if the damage persists beyond its ability to repair it, the cell will turn on its mutation machinery and open the floodgates for evolution.”(1, 2, 3, 4) These evolutionary processes also respond to antibiotics, UV light, and other things that can cause damage in the genes. The fact that living things are in control of evolution contradicts the widely held notion that evolution is unguided, and at the same time indicates that these evolutionary processes may be intelligently designed.

Darwinian evolution is a weak theory being propped up by a set of unconfirmed beliefs, not because of facts.
- Darwinian evolution has been called the “greatest show on earth” by a famous biologist. Supposedly, Darwinism can explain all of life's complex machines and codes. Is blind evolution really the greatest? The evidence needed to show it is the greatest is: confirmed data about an unguided process that can build the coding systems and sophisticated nanotechnology systems that have been discovered in the living cell. Without evidence of this mechanism, unguided evolution is a set of unfounded beliefs hiding behind a false mask of science.

Science is already looking for intelligent living beings that are not human.
- The Search for Extraterrestrial Intelligence, or SETI, is an effort to discover intelligent life beyond our planet. Scientists are observing evidence in the form of radio signals to determine if the signals are the result of unintelligent causes (i.e., background radiation in space), or by intelligent causes (i.e., extraterrestrial intelligence).

Information explosions can be seen in the in the fossil record, like the Cambrian explosion.
- Most of the major animal phyla (body plans) begin to appear in the fossil record during the Cambrian explosion. No new animal body plans have appeared since that time. Plants experienced a similar explosion during the Devonian. Despite decades of searching, scientists have not found any part of living things that cause information explosions like the Cambrian explosion. Intelligence is the one and only known cause of information explosions.

Many of life’s most important processes are as close to perfect as natural laws will allow.
- Life has a set of near-optimal mechanisms for its most crucial tasks. While many scholars have said that life is a result of random assemblages and messy compromises, biological systems often approach limits set by basic physical laws. Other scholars who are open to ID think that these near-optimal systems provide evidence that ID could be correct. (more)

Enzymes that can actually work are extremely rare.
- Enzymes are molecules in the body, usually proteins, that speed up or control chemical reactions. The odds of sequences expected to form working enzymes are extremely low. The reported likelihood is less than one in a trillion trillion trillion trillion trillion trillion. This finding calls into question unguided processes as explanations for how evolution formed enzymes, and the finding also adds to the case for intelligent design. (more)

The conditions on Earth are fine-tuned to allow for advanced life, and at the same time those same conditions allow for advanced science.
- A huge number of facts about the earth, from its location in our galaxy to the content of the atmosphere, are all fine-tuned to allow for both advanced life and advanced science. For example, if the amount of oxygen in our atmosphere was higher, plant and animal life could not exist and controlled fire for experiments would not be possible. Living things and science experiments need a balanced amount of oxygen. The Privileged Planet hypothesis of Guillermo Gonzalez and Jay Richards presents evidence that the best explanation for this unity is intelligent design.

Intelligent design inspired one of the most important discoveries in physics: least-action principles.
- The notion of intelligent design inspired one of the greatest discoveries in science. The idea that the universe was intelligently designed encouraged those who discovered the "least-action principles" of physics. The "least-action principles" state that the path of a particle is the "best path," the path requiring the least amount of action. Scientists who developed the idea of least-action principles began with the idea that matter was designed, and then argued that it should exhibit least-action. Least-action principles are very useful in physics analysis. Least-action principles have given many solutions to new problems in physics. Least-action principles offer a way to state many physics formulas in a way that is more flexible and powerful than Newton’s optics and mechanics. Einstein’s formulas of Relativity and Schrödinger’s quantum mechanics can be derived from least-action principles. It has even been confirmed that least-action principles suggest new physical laws. The idea of least-action is at the heart of modern physics, and all of this is originally inspired by intelligent design. (more and more)

The laws of nature can be grasped by the human mind with unusual usefulness.
- It really is amazing that the human mind can understand the order in nature. If the human mind is only the result of an unguided process for survival, it does not make sense that we grasp as much as we do. Albert Einstein once said, “The most incomprehensible thing about the world is that it is comprehensible.” The fact that we can grasp nature, sometimes called 'cosmic comprehensibility', is a gift to humanity. Where did this gift come from? Some scholars see the evidence as pointing to an intelligent origin of the universe and the human mind. (more)

A design-based view of the universe must be accepted in order to reasonably practice science.
- In order to practice science, one must accept that:
  • The universe exists. This may seem obvious, but many religions believe that the universe is just a dream or an illusion that is not real.
  • The universe is ordered and follows rules. If one believes as pagans that Zeus causes lightning, or that Demeter causes crops to grow, then modern science is not going to be coherent in this person’s view. If one believes that the world is total chaos, science is not going to make sense to the person unless they are willing to let go of the belief in total chaos and accept the order in the universe. If one believes that nature is far too subtle and complex for us to understand, then science will not be possible for this person.
  • The human mind can come to understand at least some of this natural order. If one believes that the ultimate cause of the universe and man are very different, this will give reason to doubt that the human mind can understand the order of the universe.
  • Science is worth doing. Being a scientist does not make one rich or famous or popular. Typically, it is the opposite, with most scientists living comfortable but ordinary lives. There must be people willing to spend their time, and a society willing to invest resources and money.

The unusual usefulness of math in physics.
- Math, which often developed separate from the study of the natural world, is somehow a strong ally in the study of nature. There is a unique “hand in glove” fit between the forces of nature and math. The aid given to science by math is a great gift, and not to be taken for granted. Much like the fine-tuning of the natural forces for life, it seems that the forces are fine-tuned to be compatible with math. This cooperation between math and physics can be seen as more evidence pointing to intelligent design in the fabric of the universe.

The origin of the human mind indicates intelligent design.
- Working from all of the knowledge currently available, the best way to explain the origin of human reason is that it was caused by a prior reason. In this way, the human mind is evidence of intelligent design.

The more we learn, the more design presents itself as an answer.
- In every place we look, from the design of the entire universe and the laws that govern it-to the molecular machines in the tiniest living things-to the human mind, the appearance of design is there. Some people who are skeptical of ID say that the appearance is an illusion. But, the thing about an illusion is that it breaks down when you look closer. The closer we look, and the more details we learn about the universe and living things, the case for design becomes stronger and stronger. It's no illusion.
